‘A funny thing happened on the garden path…’ Part 8

It’s been how long? Oops. I’ll blame uni. Uni made me do it.

Four hundred and twenty-eight days before Day 0

The doctor and his associates were already there when I returned with the cheaper, commercial store-bought wine. Like I had the money to search far and wide for a bottle of Granlion Champagne. On top of that, I recall drinking with the good doctor, but not what we drank.

The doctor stood out like a sore thumb, which was still impressive when he was sitting in the chair opposite James. He was short and balding, but his hair stuck out from his head like it was trying to escape him, which had the effect that sitting at this table was a mad scientist. He was frowning at James, and gave me the distinct impression that no one tended to speak out against him for fear of hearing him reprimand them for wasting his time.

Two steps into Max’s apartment, I had a very bad feeling about the rest of my life. Read more…

‘A funny thing happened on the garden path…’ Part 7

Author’s Note: These are taking a lot longer then I thought they would. Or maybe it’s all the Starcraft 2. And before you ask, I have no idea why the size of the spacing betweens lines is different.

Four hundred and twenty-eight days before Day 0

After leaving the Police Station, James led me around Primus for a length of time equal to or greater than the time anyone would need to not have any idea where we were going. And in no less than thirty minutes, I found myself in a part of the city surrounded by apartment buildings. It was less that I had no idea this was here and more that I never needed to know these were here; James and I rented in a more up-town district in line with our income.

“This is the one.” James said, matching his GPS on his watch with the building name printed down the side. Read more…

Author’s Notes: I dislike this chapter, which is partly why it took so long to arrive.

Fifteen and a half days after Day 0

“But is it big enough?” James asked, inspecting the cave.

“It’s underground, with one narrow entrance and big enough to park the skimmer inside if you blew a bigger door. What more did you want?”

“A rumpus room.” He grinned and started fiddling with his watch. After ten or so seconds of being annoyed with him, his watch’s display erupted to cover the entire cave, displaying pictures and writings on the walls. Read more…

Two hundred and sixty-three days after Day 0

Captain Messner sat at his desk on the bridge of the Archimedes, lead frigate of the 22nd Intraplanetary Defense Force, like he had done every day for the last four-hundred-something days. It was one of those days he wished he could have stayed in his room, undisturbed and in bed, maybe with something good to read. He’d always been meaning to finish the e-book his wife had sent him for New Years.

Nothing was happening. Read more…

Fourteen days after Day 0

James had been making plans while I was away. In a week and half’s time I had mapped maybe 20% of the surface of the planet from low orbit in the skimmer, which was boring work but at least the skimmer had spacevision, and James wasn’t here to yell spoilers out. That being said it was lonely work and I often found it difficult to sleep when the wind picked up, despite the atmospheric resistance the skimmer provided. Comfort had clearly not being intended in its design. Read more…

Four hundred and twenty eight days before Day 0

“Alright you two, wake up. I have other things to do today then process drunkards you know.”

I opened my eyes to find myself in a temporary prison cell. James was on the floor next to me, head by the toilet. It had been one of those nights. Read more…

‘A funny thing happened on the garden path…’ Part 1

Disclaimer: This is my work. I dislike my older work on this site (who doesn’t look back and think they could have done better?) and am starting again with a story. It shall be told in chapters, in order to compel me to write it, but in smaller chunks. I understand my work ethic and it is terrible. But a page a day is hardly taxing for me to write or for you to read/enjoy. So read/enjoy this science-fiction story and kick me if updates become infrequent.
